Happy Thursday from New Zealand everyone & Happy Thanksgiving!!!
Last night, Kelly, Frankie and I spent a couple hours preparing a Thanksgiving meal for our host family! Well, I mean Kelly and I did, Frankie was designated DJ and of course catching everything on SnapChat for us. Since none of us really like Thanksgiving food we decided to make them lasagna and pumpkin pie. Last night was the first time I have ever made pumpkin pie –apparently it tasted all right considering it was gone very quickly. Our host family was so shocked that I have ever made one before. Whoops! Guess that’s what happens when you don’t like pie, you never end up making it. I loved being back in the kitchen cooking up meals because that is something I’m used to doing at home and miss it! Our host family’s children & grandchildren all came over and everyone brought a dish to pass. Frankie’s mom is also finally here and joined us as well! It was fun to have everyone over to celebrate. However, it was definitely weird to have Thanksgiving dinner out on the deck in 75-degree weather. It was heaven!!!!! Something I wouldn’t mind getting used to! It was also weird not having the day off today and not looking at all the black Friday ads deciding what stores we should hit up first. That is one thing I will miss--black Friday shopping! It was a perfect night today to celebrate Thanksgiving and I am so happy that we were able to celebrate with so many people!
Today with my class I introduced them to Thanksgiving. We talked a little bit about Thanksgiving and what it means to be thankful, read/colored a book and also did a really cute turkey art project. It was so cute because so many of the kids thought turkeys and chickens were the same thing. I then surprised them with a pumpkin pie to taste. Only one of my students has tried pumpkin pie before so I was really excited to see if they would like it because I cannot stand the texture of pumpkin pie! Reminds me of baby food! They all wanted to see the pumpkin pie before I started serving people pieces. As I was showing them, one of my students asked if it was a peanut butter block, another asked if it tasted like pumpkin soup, and one even asked if he could burry his face in it. I couldn’t help but laugh. Before we ate the pie, we did a class graph to see how many friends thought they would like the pie and how many thought they wouldn’t like it. It was actually very interesting because all my kiddos ended up liking it beside 3 of them. It was so neat to see them all excited about Thanksgiving and that I was able to share this special American holiday with them all.
Today definitely reminded me how grateful I am for so many things, especially being here. This experience is like no other. It is truly amazing. I hope everyone back at home has a great Thanksgiving!! Eat lots of food and of course, most importantly, enjoy time with your family!!
